Mention Raja Ampat to most people and you’ll be met with a blank stare. Mention it, however, to avid divers, and you’ll see a glaze of either nostalgia or unfettered longing wash over their eyes. Raja Ampat – meaning four kings’ in Indonesian, referring to the four largest islands in the area – is located off the far westernmost tip of the world’s second-largest island, Papua New Guinea, and is the Holy Grail for many divers. Though relatively easy to access, the area is nevertheless quite remote. From the Indonesian capital of Jakarta, nearly 2,800km distant, a four-hour flight is required to reach Raja Ampat’s primary point of entry, Sorong, at the tip of West Papua. It can also be reached via a flight from Makassar on the large island of Sulawesi. From Sorong, a boat is required to explore the many islands of Raja Ampat. It is this relative isolation, combined with the serendipitous commingling of oceanic currents from the Pacific and Indian Oceans, that gives rise to the region’s startling beauty and biodiversity. This is the marine wonderland where two oceans meet. Raja Ampat lies at the centre of the famed Coral Triangle, the global apex of underwater biodiversity. In Raja Ampat, that richness of life reaches its zenith, with some 75% of all the world’s known coral species found here. Vast schools of fish, an abundance of sharks, giant manta rays, and a great host of invertebrates are on display here, with over 1,500 species of marine fishes having been recorded, along with an incredible 537 species of coral. Into the world of Raja Ampat A ramshackle busy port town that is the main jumping-off point for Raja Ampat, Sorong has a dusty main street stretching along the shoreline lined with markets and general stores. The town offers almost no preview of the wonders of Raja Ampat, but there are nevertheless several points of interest, including a Buddhist Temple located on a hilltop with splendid views, a fish market with a bountiful array of fish and a bustling produce market with necklaces made from shells, colourful bilum bags, wooden carvings and tropical fruit and vegetables sold by women with broad smiles and teeth stained red from betel nut. Touring Raja Ampat is offered at many different levels, from budget to luxury. That said, even if you go on a shoestring trip, merely travelling to the regency is a near-status symbol among Indonesians. Airfare from Jakarta to Sorong is surprisingly costly, despite being available on two commercial airlines’ schedules and flights being generally full. A similar phenomenon exists for flights from Makassar. Once you’ve arrived in Sorong, however, the options for reaching the magical islands and seas of Raja Ampat are numerous. From live-aboard luxury charter yachts to local transport and basic home stays in a number of island villages, a vacation in Raja Ampat is everything you would expect it to be. There are no grand send-offs in Sorong, as the jetty is as ramshackle as the town itself. Regardless of the class of boat you will ultimately be on, your departure is decidedly low-brow. Passengers will typically climb down from the jetty of dubious construction, it must be said into a small dinghy or inflatable runabout that then heads to one of the many boats bobbing at anchor in the bay. Petra’s tender made its way to the Ombak Putih, a traditional Phinisi sailing boat whose name means white wave’, and she describes the scene Onboard were 17 other passengers – expats from Jakarta and intrepid travellers from the US, Netherlands, and Australia. We were about to embark on a journey of adventure, the course set westwards. The many islands of Raja Ampat are characterised by rugged coastlines and lush tropical jungles, with steep cliffs, narrow ravines and deep valleys. Much of the terrain is inaccessible, with waterfalls, secluded bays, and powdery white sand beaches that are still largely unexplored. The karst topography in the region is spectacular, a bizarre landscape of hundreds of tiny islands shaped like mushrooms that rise abruptly from the sea with bases eroded over time by the relentless motion of the sea. For the next 10 days, we would wake at sunrise before commencing our excursions on land and underwater. Best of all for me was the snorkelling, which had me flipping backwards into the sea several times a day. With my mask on, the world below was all-consuming, an onslaught of colour with countless species of fish that I noted diligently in my journal until the list became too long. My favourites were the yellow lionfish, angelfish, the golden trumpet fish, the purple, lime green and blue wrasse, giant multi-coloured clams, cuttlefish, parrotfish, and diagonally banded sweetlips. I snorkelled alongside inquisitive hawksbill turtles, and as my confidence increased, I went beyond the coral reef to deeper darker waters where barracuda and blacktip reef sharks patrol. In a saltwater lake, we were surrounded Isolation and splendour abound by hundreds of large golden jellyfish and while we saw whales and dozens of dolphins that came alongside the boat to play, the most amazing sight of all had to be the corals vibrant, multi-coloured, soft and hard, in a multitude of shapes resembling staghorn and crinkled champagne flutes. Meanwhile, Chad set out from Sorong to board Amandira, another traditional Phinisi sailing vessel whose name translates to peaceful and intrepid’ Owing to a rare and unexpected scheduling intersection of the 52-metre Amandira and 32-metre Amanikan, we were afforded the sublime opportunity to experience both of these incredible ships as we plied the waters of Raja Ampat and for six days luxuriated in the service and hospitality for which Aman is known. Amandira carries a crew of 14 to 15 for a maximum of 10 passengers, with Amanikan having a crew of 10 for six passengers, both ships including a dive instructor, private chef, masseur, waiter, and of course the marine crew. Some of the crew members perform double duty, and we found all the crew, without exception, to be friendly, capable, and accommodating. Our itinerary included plenty of excursions both above and below water. Red Bird of Paradise One of the more remarkable experiences early in our trip was a pre-dawn jaunt to the small island of Gam, as we set out to see the elusive Red Bird of Paradise Paradisaea rubra. With a wizened local guide leading the way, we hiked through the jungle to the top of a hill where we crouched behind a weathered blind and quietly waited. Naturalists and wildlife photographers often spend hours patiently waiting to observe Birds of Paradise, among the world’s most stunning and curious birds. Endemic to this region, the 42 species in this family – each more bizarre and spectacular than the last – routinely represent the pinnacle of an ornithologist’s observations. As the Red Bird of Paradise is found only on a handful of islands in Raja Ampat, and nowhere else in the world, we were fortunate indeed to see an extended mating ritual, with two males loudly competing for a female’s attention, dancing and displaying in the trees above us. We watched in rapt attention for an hour, then began our descent, the birds still locked in their cacophonous ritual. Petra’s own Bird of Paradise hunt, on the other hand, showed the more capricious side of nature, as she relates here A pre-dawn quest following in the footsteps of the naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace was a must-do adventure, but not even a pot full of Indonesian coffee allowed me to face the day at 3am with a smile, so I filled my pockets with coffee toffees to keep in reserve. Men from the village of Yembesir led us to canoes from where we silently glided over the water towards the island of Gam. From here, we clambered onto a rickety jetty before clinging onto ropes and hauling ourselves up on a steep upward climb in pitch darkness. Sitting on hard wooden planks, we waited for dawn to break with the village men peering enthusiastically into the treetops mimicking the mating call of the Red Bird of Paradise. And then they came one at first, followed by several more. We could see the curious bobbing, flapping, and weaving dance, so took aim with our cameras, waiting for the birds to descend. But nature is unpredictable. They flew away, so I sucked on the toffees to keep the adventure sweet and began the slippery, muddy climb down, accompanied by the squawks of black cockatoos and the chuffing of hornbills. Later, at the island of Batanta, we hiked from Arefi Village where local guides escorted us through the lush rainforest to a waterfall. The guides motioned for us to swim in the refreshing pool, but there was a second, much larger waterfall – and we could hear it. We continued on the uphill climb, following a rock-strewn freshwater stream that we ultimately had to cross in order to reach the waterfall, which was just as powerful and spectacular as its sound had forecast. Village children at Arborek We also met with local villagers and experienced an ancient traditional culture, viewing rock paintings of hand prints, stencilled fish, and human figures dating back 5,000 years. At Arborek, an island village that provides homestay accommodation to divers, we were given a traditional dance performance by young children who then ran and skipped behind us as we circumnavigated the idyllic tiny island. For both Chad and Petra, the striking scenery in the Wayag archipelago in the north of Raja Ampat, was one of the trip’s most beguiling wonders. Chad shares his experience In Wayag, another pre-dawn morning saw us climbing a series of steep limestone faces – a trek not for the faint of heart, it must be said – to reach the summit of Mount Pindito, which afforded us with breathtaking, postcard-perfect panoramas of the stunning turquoise lagoons and forested karst islands of North Wayag, as the sun breached the horizon in the distance. This was one of the more strenuous activities we undertook, and in truth, it presented quite a challenge for most of our group, but the crew managed to keep us safe and we were rewarded with some of the finest views of the entire voyage. Later that day, we found ourselves swimming with sharks, as a quartet of sleek blacktip reef sharks cruised effortlessly around us, oftentimes nearly at arm’s length. Though these are not considered a dangerous species, being in the water with such graceful predators was thrilling nevertheless. Petra agreed wholeheartedly Wayag was certainly the highlight of our trip. Few areas in Indonesia can lay claim to such natural splendour as the Wayag archipelago. The beauty of these karst spires is equalled only by the brilliant colours and vibrancy of the reefs and marine life. On a small boat, we explored the maze of mushroom-shaped islands, coves and lagoons, narrow channels and inlets, caves, and sandy beaches. And between towering jagged limestone cliffs that rise dramatically, we climbed almost vertically to reach the highest point, from where we looked across at the wide expanse below. The time spent in the company of the boats’ crews and new friends was also a marvellous part of the experience, as Chad found While still in Wayag, in a fitting end to such a remarkable day, we were provided with one of the most memorable moments of the cruise a starlit barbecue dinner on a secluded island beach. The combined crews of the two ships spent the afternoon setting up a dinner that was frankly jaw-dropping in its nuanced execution. And when the moment came, and the guests of Amandira and Amanikan were taken to the small island, we stepped onto the transformed beach, spellbound with delight. Afterward, we released lanterns into the cloudless, star-splashed night sky over the Raja Ampat islands and retreated – utterly satisfied and content – back to our luxurious accommodations on board. Raja Ampat Snorkeling Tour, Nov, 2017 Trip Report Raja Ampat 2017 trip report. Another superlative CTA excursion through the very heart of the Coral Triangle! We are just back from our latest journey through the islands of Raja Ampat and we’re still bathing in the afterglow of the experience. Our trip began with wonderful weather and though we had a bit of rain here and there during the course of the route that never took away from the area’s magnificent underwater backdrops. Raja Ampat covers a massive area with hundreds of islands so it could never be adequately covered during just one snorkeling trip. Thus, we decided to focus on the northern islands above Sorong and charted a unique route that took us through the area’s wide-ranging marine habitats. Table corals Wayag Islands Every one of CTA’s trips is an exclusively-crafted itinerary, specific to the locale, the weather, the marine life and the underwater conditions. From Sorong we headed into the blue waters along northern Batanta then sailed along western Waigeo and across the equator to the spectacular limestone islands of Wayag. Working our way back down towards the famed and fishy waters of the Dampier Strait we explored off-the-beaten-path reefs that offered up some unbelievable and unforgettable gems. A few of the numerous highlights from this adventure include watching an incredibly rare Hairy octopus’ escapades, finding a trio of minute Crinoid cuttlefish fight for the right to mate with a female, and watching the shy behaviors of one of the most extraordinary reef fish in these waters, a Picturesque dragonet. As always we were able to find a plethora of vibrant nudibranchs and other bizarrely-colored invertebrates but we also had some time to watch the behaviors of big fish, such as bumphead parrotfish feeding, tasseled wobbeong sharks camouflaging themselves on the seafloor, and huge resident manta rays visiting their cleaning stations. Colorful coral garden It is not only the astonishing wildlife and delightful scenery we consistently get to observe, but the people who come with CTA who make our trips ones to remember. Our unfailingly passionate and inquisitive group of avid snorkelers create the best atmosphere one can imagine for exploring the shallow marine habitats of the Coral Triangle.

Tripadvisor performs checks on express the wonderful experience my brother and I had here. I completed my OWD in 2017 and wanted my brother to discover joys of diving. Heike was an excellent instructor for my brothers OWD course and was incredibly practical regarding skills on top of PADI curriculum. Able to complete some amazing fun dives with the fantastic divemaster Mario, who was a joy to dive with and had great chat. Great attitude towards coral, able to point out and spot things. All the staff are incredibly friendly Heike, Paul, Captain, Romy, Pascal, quality gear and amazing experience. Loved the aspect of the dive centre being smaller than most, got a very personal touch to them. Couldn’t recommend this dive shop more and would also suggest looking into the homestays right next to them too. We stayed at Coconut house which was literally right next door to the dive shop. Although this is a diving resort, they provided specially tailored trips for us as to snorkel in beautiful shallow reefs and even trips to see Manta staffs go out of their way to keep us comfortable and happy. Tripadvisor performs checks on just and i mean hours ago finished a week of diving with Githa and Marsel at Arborek Dive Shop and what a phenomenal time we had. Manta madness. Githa is especially bubbly, passionate and enthusiastic and we loved the vibes. A few things to note they are not dive instructors, they are very good guides who are great at finding things but they wont teach you how to dive. My recommendation is you should have a MINIMUM of 50 dives before diving here. The currents are strong and unpredictable and often times Githa is filiming on her GoPro because 1 thats how she markets her business2 she is a part of a program to track and document local is a locally owned dive shop. They wont work on Sundays or religious holidays, so you would have to be a twit to ask them to or complain if they say no. There were a couple of absolute donkeys who suck at diving and refused to pay for their dives. Dont be those people. If you arent an experienced diver or youre expecting western standards, dont come. If you are a comfortable diver and love mantas and passionate divers then come and enjoy without hesitation. There are acrually no more words needed to describe our stay at Pef. Amazing stands for all Pef teams like chefs, housekeeping, maintenance, back office, band and of course the dive team with which we spent our time the most. We were really sad to leave this place after our two weeks stay!The area offers great diving with alive reefs, lots of fish and convenient boats! Best is only one buddy team per guide. Never had such amazing conditions with all my previous diving. I can highly recommend this place for everyone. Pef offers so much to do beside the diving such as great snorkeling, kayaking, hiking, rain forrest walk,... there is always something you can do from young to old! Tripadvisor performs checks on spent almost two weeks aboard the Pindito, making up to 4 dives each day. This boat runs so well and so smoothly. It's hard to imagine a better live-aboard diving crew really knows Raja Ampat. The cruise directors chose the sites carefully depending on conditions, plans, and the desires of the divers. The dive guides were skilled, knowledgeable, and careful. Everyone from the panga drivers, to the tank handlers, to guys looking after your equipment, to the stewards handing you a cup of water and snack or a hot chocolate after a night dive just went about their business with tremendous spirit and efficiency. I felt very well taken care food was delicious and the stewards not only knew who I was but what my food preference were. Because I'm a vegetarian, they made sure I had a good, tasty protein selection for every ship itself is nicely laid out and has a very cosy vibe. The deck upstair provided a great spot to socialize or just to lie and recuperate. If you're a birder bring a pair of binoculars. You might see hornbills, sea eagles, kites, macaws, parrots and who knows what else as the boat idles by one of the many small islands in Raja thing I liked is that the management and the crew exhibited a sense of stewardship about the environment we were exploring. And I felt that the management was mindful not only of the guests but of the crew as well. Tripadvisor performs checks on best six days that I can remember! We loved our comfortable paradise cabin with en suite bathroom, right at the edge of the beach. The meals were fantastic, day after day. The location was perfect, with a great "house reef" just 100m offshore, fabulous birds in the trees overhead and birds of paradise not far away, and an interesting village nearby with another reef, cool cemetery, etc. Although not many guests were around to share boat trips, we managed to have two excellent days on/under the water, seeing dolphins, sharks, turtles, cuttlefish, nudibranchs, kajillion fish, and an incredible variety of healthy corals. Tripadvisor performs checks on EKettering, Australia3 contributionsAbsolutely fantastic experience - would come back, this has to be the ultimate way to see the bays, beaches, islands, wildlife and homestays of Raja did an 11 day trip and each day brought exceptional experiences. We were fortunate to enjoy great weather and see dolphins, mantas, whales and countless turtles. The snorkling was so good - magical coral gardens and many many fish. All the guest houses were authentic with idyllic situations and provided good food and comfortable nights kayaks are good quality fiberglass and nice to paddle we sea kayak at home. The team at Kayak4Conservation were so wonderful, everything went very smoothly. Our guides Kony and Usak did a great job looking after us - it was just the four of us and we came back from our adventure with them as friends. This trip might stretch your budget but it's worth it to support this sustainable tourism initiative and for all the memorable experiences. If you want to see something in particular, ask them and they will try to bring you to the places with the best chances of spotting it provided that you have the level to dive there safely. Moreover they have super-human abilities to spot really small and difficult t see animals such as pigmey seahorses, sea-ghost pipe-fishes, hairy shrimps, frog-fishes, etc. I have a PADI divemaster and hundreds of dives around the world, yet I did learn a good deal about how to find small wildlife from these guys! The diving was always performed in a safe and environmentally conscious way! Prices are honest if not cheap compared to all the other dive-centers I have seen in the area. Tripadvisor performs checks on RPerth, Australia36 contributionsMy first trip to Raja Ampat in March 2023. Diving was superb with stunning coral in very healthy condition. Unfortunately the Southern area seems to have been plundered by fishing during COVID presumably when there weren't so many eyes on the area. Only small schools of barracuda, trevally etc. Only a few reef sharks seen on the trip. I was told by friends it was much better in terms of biomass pre-COVID. Hopefully it will bounce back in a few years... In terms of the iLike, it is a well-run boat thanks to cruise director Nicky and the crew. Very safe and professional. The boat has plenty of room for the guests to spread out, although shaded, cool areas were in shorter supply. The placement of the engine/generator exhaust pipes at the waterline mid-ship meant the main cabin needed its windows shut to avoid filling up with exhaust fumes, making it a hot place to be - especially with the open kitchen in this area also. The exhaust fumes had an annoying tendency to get sucked back into the dining area at the stern which meant for a sore throat after about an hour of sitting there. Luckily there were some shade sails on the foredeck which was also the smoking area. My surface time was spent trying not to get roasted in the sun whilst chasing clean air!The living quarters were comfortable with enough space for each guest. Obviously being a wooden ship there was all the expected creaking etc. so some earplugs for the first night or two is recommended until you get used it. The hull was reportedly deeper than other wooden ships with less rolling in bigger seas. Thankfully we had very calm seas so didn't get to test it out. The iLike is faster than other wooden ships in the area due to its dual engines so travel time was reduced and we covered a fairly large area during the trip. The dive equipment is well worn but reasonably well maintained. The dive tenders and boat boys do a good job with efficient transitions to and from the dive sites. The dive guides were good but nothing really outstanding - they just did their job. They were safe and reliable which is the main thing I guess. The cruise director Nicky did a fantastic job in organising the crew and guests. His enthusiasm was consistent throughout the trip, rain or shine. The food was impressive with the volume provided from small kitchen area. The food was basic but enthusiastically served and presented well. Alcohol was available to buy no BYO with prices in Euro, meaning a 200-300% mark-up for a can of Bintang. I find using a foreign currency to charge in this way off-putting. It is an unsubtle way to disguise overpriced beer – just price in IDR and I’m sure you’ll sell just as many. The drinks were accounted for on an honesty system with the tab settled at the end of the trip which was settling of finances at the end of the trip was really messy. Due to marine park and equipment hire fees not being included in the trip price, guests were expected carry a large amount of cash with them 500-600 Euros in some cases. I didn’t have the cash on me, there were no credit card reading/transfer facilities on the ship, and Paypal direct funds transfer was the only option offered. The internet speed on the mobile network in Sorong is super-slow so it’s recommended to set up Paypal for direct funds transfer before going on the trip load your account with enough Euro to allow instantaneous transfer as funds take a few days to clear when you load them. Unfortunately my final night was spent scrambling to try to get funds cleared instead of spending it with other guests doing the usual end-of-trip stuff. In the end I resorted to waking up and hour earlier and driving into Sorong to find an ATM and withdraw 1,000,000 IDR in multiple transactions. It was a ridiculous amount of cash to carry around and embarrassing to bring back and have counted in front of the Indonesian crew. The other financial issue is the matter of tipping. It is so gross to be asked for a tip with an envelope at the end of a trip. Just pay the crew what they are worth and avoid the cringe-worthy tipping exercise! It’s not part of Indonesian culture. It is a cash-grab from a captive audience and is gross when presented in this way. Gratuities for excellent service is fine but expected tipping is awful. If the crew are relying on tips which they aren’t then charge the guests more I’d happily pay extra to avoid end-of-trip transactions, pay the crew more, and stop doing this. It’s not the United States. It feels cheap. Stop it. All-in-all a good trip on a very well-run liveaboard. I’ll return to Raja Ampat in a few years and hopefully the biomass has been restored if the fishing is reduced. I worry that the best times are behind us in this region in terms of pristine reef habitats. The iLike is a nice ship but the clumsy/messy management of finances by the onshore/head office team by splitting up the bill etc. was disappointing. I’ll probably look elsewhere next time to avoid finishing the trip like that. It doesn’t leave a good impression. Hopefully those issues are rectified in future for other guests. Tripadvisor performs checks on dive trip with Big Blue Indonesia to Raja Ampat, West Papua was a great adventure for us 2 divers with +500 dives each and 1 snorkeler. My friend and former boss at a dive business in South Korea has now established a dive boat operation after a couple of years of unbelievable effort. This is one of the must-see dive areas with unbeatable bio-diversity, tropical water, and still unspoilt. Most dive spots were great for snorkelers or they just used one of the two zodiacs to reach the perfect spot. We had 2 weeks on board on the beautiful traditional wooden craft. This really was a fantastic dive trip with plenty of new corals and creatures we had not seen before, impressive schools of fish, manta rays, sharks and some interesting overhangs and caves. It was the best ever to be on board on a well equipped and carefully restored dive boat. Plenty of space for torches, cameras etc. No worries on the dive deck including Nitrox. The charming crew did spoil us 24h! The dive guides briefings were always well explained, never in a rush and safety was always first. Our recommendation go for 2 weeks! it is so beautiful and the time goes too quickly. We also would say a big thank you to everyone. As we worked in dive business we know how much work is behind the scenes to make such a great unforgettable dive experiences. We hope to see you again soon! We just loved it.
